The Autumnal Equinox is happening tomorrow September 23. This signals the end of summer and the end of citrus and light scents. The Northern Hemisphere will soon turn into cooler days and nights that turn the leaves into beautiful brilliant colors. We will reach for sweaters and jackets and heavier fragrances.

I love fall. The crisp, cool morning air. The delightful warm afternoons. The Indian summer sunset evenings.

The beaches are almost deserted and life slows down here in Southern California.

The other aspects of fall I love are the leathery, woodsy, sultry, smoky scents that I associate with fall bonfires, crispy leaves, and cinnamon and spicy, warm apple cider. JoAnne Bassett Italian Smoke, Italian Leather and Sacred Frankincense 3

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about JoAnne Bassett?s Call to Prayer, which I was loving so much I didn?t have a chance to test the three samples she included, Italian Smoke, Italian Leather and Sacred Frankincense 3. Well, I?ve tested all three, so here?s the scoop.

Sacred Frankincense 3 is written of as ?A sultry tuberose walk in the woods after dark with orange blossoms caressing your nose.? It?s very lovely, but I think the orange blossom is far more the star than the tuberose, which frankly I think is no bad thing.

Italian Smoke is ?Italian Smoke has uplifting sweet orange essence and orange blossoms, the sensuous heart of vintage jasmine grandifolium, the smoky, sexiness of tobacco absolute, the sweetness of vanilla, and the vintage Mysore sandalwood.? It?s very interesting- I don?t get smoke at all, but a winning combination of orange and tobacco.

Italian Leather is ?This sensuous leather is like a summer evening?s drive in a Bugatti with leather seats and jasmine and orange blossoms in the air?cistus, wild orange, vintage jasmine grandifolium, Bulgarian tobacco, light patchouli.? It?s far and away my favorite of the bunch- the ?leather? is in no way overpowering with a lovely hit of jasmine and tobacco.

All 0f them have excellent lasting power- I could smell them on my skin after sleeping. Also, they are super concentrated- you might at first balk at the price, but it?s clear that the ingredients are the best and you really only need to use the tiniest drop.

Sensual Embrace reminds me of Histoires de Parfums Tubereuse 3 Animale and House Of Cherry Bomb Tuberose Tobacco, Tubereuse 3 Animale is sweeter and softer, Tuberose Tobacco comes off boozy and much more musky, they all have similar floral and tobacco notes.

What I love most about Sensual Embrace is that with those mix of notes you would think the fragrance would be very haphazard, not at all, it’s very smooth.

This is a really strong yet soft, citrusy, smoky, complex, with soft woody, animalic and musky undertones Floral fragrance, this is unisex but leans more towards the feminine side, great for ages twenty five and above.
This would can be worn all year ’round, it would be perfect for the fall and winter, I get good projection and average longevity, this is another winner for me, great fragrance JoAnne Bassett, ?4/5 Stars

SOTD: Dark Mistress EDP by JoAnne Bassett (Sample) New (Review) , this is classified as an Oriental Woody, the notes are Jasmine, Rose, Yuzu, Tuberose, Tulsi, Champaca, Violet Leaf, Ylang-Ylang, Clove, Rhododendron, Peru Balsam, Olibanum, Brazilian Rosewood and Neroli.

I keep noticing the more I explore Indie perfumes the more I love them, more so over the last year, the perfumers seem to take their time and put their love, heart and soul into each and everyone of their creations, their perfumes are a reflection of their character.

Each oil they use, every minute, hour and day they spend putting together something perfect, magical and exquisite, not only for them but mostly for you, Dark Mistress is no exception, so come, take a journey with me and experience JoAnne Bassett’s alluring and mystical dark side.

I get the Jasmine, Tuberose, Clove, Violet Leaf, Olibanum and Brazilian Rosewood, it starts of with some jasmine and tuberose making it creamy, bitter with a touch of soapiness, the opening of this the floral notes are very heady, it does taper off within fifteen minutes, the jasmine is strong the tuberose is mild.

Then after about thirty minutes the tuberose dissipates along with the bitterness and soapiness, the tuberose softens and remains, in comes the clove and violet leaf, making it green, fresh and dry, the clove is strong, the violet leaf is soft, when the fragrance develops to this point I get a soft animalic smell that lasts about thirty minutes.

Then after about two hours the jasmine dissipates, along with the violet leaf, the clove softens and remains, in comes the Brazilian rosewood and olibanum making it resinous, spicy and incensed. the Brazilian rosewood and olibanum are mild.

Dark Mistress reminds me of Serge Lutens A La Nuit and Tubereuse Criminelle, A La Nuit is sweeter and softer, Tubereuse Criminelle comes off more animalic and bitter, they all have similar floral and spicy notes.

I can see someone like Elizabeth Taylor, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Marilyn Monroe wearing this, they’re rough, brash and fierce, yet mysterious, glamorous and beautiful style icons, Dark Mistress is just that.

What I love most about Dark Mistress is has a vintage feel and smell, but it’s very timeless at the same time, even though it has quite a few notes, it’s very smooth and refined, it’s very well blended, the notes flow together seamlessly.

Dark Mistress is a very classy, elegant, sophisticated, smoky, bright yet dark, strong, with soft touches of citrus and woody undertones Oriental Woody fragrance, this is unisex and mature, perfect for ages thirty and above.

This can be worn all year round; it would be perfect for the fall and winter, I get average projection and average longevity, this fragrance is a beautiful Dark Mistress indeed, wonderful JoAnne 4/5 Stars.
