Cistus Inspiration for a New Perfume

August 5th, 2011 by

One of my favorite raw materials to work with is cistus…rockrose…labdanum. These are all words for cistus.? Cistus?landiferus is the Latin binomial of the cistus essential oil that I so fondly love to work with.

This photo is a cistus flower taken near my house in Southern California.? Making natural perfumes is some a delight.? I love it that I have?the fresh flower to compare to the essential oil.? Natural perfumes containing cistus have a meditative quality about them.? It is a meditative amber scent.? It is calming to me and comforting on a deep level.? I like it for the healing properties it gives my perfumes.? It is definitely transformational.

A number of my natural perfumes contain cistus.? Check it out.

What do you love about cistus?

Honeysuckle Tincture From My Yard

July 26th, 2011 by

Oh how I love honeysuckle..the tender white and yellow flowers.? The fragrance of honeysuckle is unmistakable.? There is no other smell quite like it…it is difficult to capture.

This is a honeysuckle bush in my backyard.? Here is a bottle of organic grape alcohol that I put the small honeysuckle blossoms in to create a tincture.? Now all I need is patience! Does anyone have any extra patience they can spare?

Why I Like To Create Tinctures

July 24th, 2011 by

This beautiful yellow rose smells absolutely gorgeous.? Its fragrance permeates the air. ? I am not able to buy a yellow rose otto so I grow my own roses and flowers and tincture them in alcohol.? The wonderful rose scented alcohol is a exclusive addition to some of my perfumes.? So grateful to be able to use my organic flowers and plants for my natural perfumes.

Tetu Eau De Parfum – The Morph Story

July 20th, 2011 by

Tetu eau de parfum was created for the Summer of Love Patchouli Project 2011.? Monica Miller at the Perfume Pharmer created this fun project.

I began to assemble my 25% patchouli requirement in a bottle.? I had some awesome vintage dark patchouli and also some light patchouli that play well together so I put them in the bottle to take a twirl…interesting. ? So what next?

I began to pick up bottle after bottle, a drop here a drop there…smoky, sensuous rose, sultry jasmine, sexy misc. amber notes, and then morph..Oh gourmand notes…cocoas absolute, vanilla absolute, wild orange, sweet orange, butter, bergamot, nutmeg, and star anise.

Then it felt done…24 essential oils and absolutes in all.? It has quite a journey through smoke, floral, sexy, and gourmand to a powdery amber drydown…on my skin that is.

Tetu means stubborn in French.? With 9 base notes she does persist..she lasts and lasts.? What a headstrong passionate thing she is!? Get your Tetu at my Etsy site at this link. http://www.etsy.com/shop/joannebassett

T?tu Eau de Parfum

July 2nd, 2011 by

Patchouli

T?tu Eau de Parfum was created for the Summer of Patchouli Love Project 2011 – Peace, Love, and Patchouli

We were to create an eau de parfum with 25% patchouli and 15%
concentration in alcohol.

I named my perfume Exotic Nights. I shared it with Ida Meister and she
thought it should be T?tu. Because I have French heritage and it means
stubborn. Thank you Ida Meister for the name and thank you Monica Miller
for helping me change the name before it was published…

T?tu means stubborn in French. T?tu is a headstrong and passionate
fragrance. This aphrodisiac is created with patchouli, sultry vintage
jasmine, sensual rose centifolia, amber, and smoky notes. It is a musky,
spicy, and sexy number that is absolutely brilliant and outrageous.

Notes: Vintage Patchouli, vintage jasmine, sensual rose centifolia, amber,
and smoky notes with a citrus lift. Vanilla absolute and cocoa absolute
add to the gourmand quality. With nine base notes this fragrance lasts all
day and into your exotic night. 24 natural botanicals in all.

Dark Mistress, the Night Queen Review

June 25th, 2011 by

A Midsummer Night’s Dream Perfume Event ~ Reviews by Scott Ellis

JoAnne Bassett Perfumes, JoAnne Bassett parfumeur ~ Reine de Nuit eau de parfum.
This smells like an expensive perfume that you could find on the shelf at Lucky Scent in LA. If I didn’t know it was all natural I wouldn’t know it was all natural, understand? Night queen is listed as one of the ingredients of this perfume and isn’t something I am very familiar with. In fact, I don’t think I have ever heard of night queen before. This perfume, according to Ms. Bassett, is based on the night and not on a certain character from the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This definitely isn’t a fairy’s perfume. Not even a little bit. This is a big, loud, sexy perfume. It might belong to Titania if she wasn’t such a fairy herself. The best way to describe this perfume is to say that if Marilyn Monroe, Bette Midler, Madonna and Lady Gaga all got together to make a perfume, then this is what they would come up with. The other ingredients in this perfume include rhododendron, peru balsam, rosewood, damask rose oil, neroli, tuberose, vintage jasmine sambac, frankincense, yuzu, clove bud, tulsi, frankincense noir, champa, vetiver, violet leaf and ylang-ylang. Smells really great on me, my girl and our roommates. Scary sexy.

Night Queen Becomes Dark Mistress

June 25th, 2011 by

Today on Facebook I conducted a poll regarding my latest launch Night Queen eau de parfum. I was asking if the name is better as Night Queen or Reine de Nuit, or Queen of the Night or Reine de la Nuit.

I received a response from Michelyn Camen of http://www.Cafleurbon.com. She said it should be named Dark Mistress. So the new name is Dark Mistress, the Night Queen. I give credit to Michelyn Camen and http://www.Cafleurebon.com for the new name of Dark Mistress.

For a behind the scenes interview with Cafleurebon and myself.

Review of Night Queen Eau de Parfum

Night Queen ~ JoAnne Bassett

Night Queen is my favorite perfume so far from JoAnne Bassett Perfumes.

CESTRUM NOCTURNUM
Night Blooming Jasmine

Quick Facts
-flowers are green, small and not very showy
-not a true Jasmine

From a Plant seller: ?In my opinion , Cestrum nocturnum, has the strongest fragrance out of all the fragrant plants we carry. In the evening the fragrance becomes almost intoxicating. It is a common misconception that this bush is fragrant only at night. It is true that the fragrance is stronger in the evening but you can still smell a light scent all day long.?

JoAnne?s Words: So it begins. I had ordered an interesting oil named Night Queen and had not used it. This was my chance. What a strange and inviting smell. So in the course of an afternoon I added rhododendron, night queen, peru balsam, rosewood, damask rose oil, neroli, tuberose . .one of my favorite night smells in India or France, vintage jasmine sambac.. another queen of the night, frankincense, yuzu, clove bud, tulsi, frankincense noir ? dark and for the night, champa ~ that you smell on warm Indian nights, vetiver, violet leaf ~that wonderful green forest smell, and ylang ylang for some extra romance. With 17 oils this 100% natural perfume said yes. It will transform you?if you allow it?

Monica: This is a stunning fragrance on moi and a ?pesonal best? from JoAnne Bassett ..meaning MY personally favorite fragrance from this perfume house so far. I keep thinking about those sherbet fizzies candies that explode with tangy sweetness in your mouth, tart and juicy, fruity and floral! This is very different- to me- from JoAnne Basett Perfumes. I want a big bottle of this in a spray. Very Very Summer!
